So my next piece is going up for sale soon, and it's been previewed to the public. As usual (and against my better judgement) I go check out the initial reaction to the image tease. I'm used to the guys who say "PASS", "EASY PASS", "FAIL", etc because it's just a part of the game. These guys have nothing better to do than to take the time to read through the comments and then post their feelings on a piece that they *allegedly* care nothing about....kind of ironic, to me at least. Then there's the more insidious deskchair QB's who take the time to actually deride your work and say how it could have been better if only *this* or *that* had been done in a haughty "I'm superior" manner, as if they had the talent to do it in the first place. So I read through the comments and find this GEM:
"Too bad Sideshow couldn't give away the ZBrush source file for these as an exclusive, since I have zbrush . That alone would make this more than worth my money."
So this guy is notorious for talking utter shit about everything that I do...and what a lot of other sculptors do, ones more talented than myself, for that matter. He spends time coming back, making more comments, and never anything good. After I got used to the guy, I pretty much overlooked his comments...until this one. I think this is one of the few times that I have ever been really GALLED at the gumption of people. I know where this guy is headed, he wants the ZTool of the piece so he can haphazardly move some parts around with his "superior eye" and VIOLA! IT'S NOW FIXED AND PERFECT! Look at me! I'm so talented! GIVE ME AFFIRMATION OF WHAT I BELIEVE ABOUT MYSELF SO THAT I KNOW IT'S ACTUALLY TRUE!!! I've run into my fair share of artists, traditional and digital, that wear the word ZBrush as if it's a fKin medal of valor or the last name "Kennedy". I got news for you, this ain't camelot and you're not Jackie O. If you were that good, you'd most likely have a resume that shows evidence of that talent in some way. Hell, even a portfolio would be some evidence....but do they ever have one? .....crickets.....crickets.....
The other part that gets to me is that this person actually thinks that he should get the digital file of it for free! W....T...F? It's called company property, you douche. It reflects a greater problem of digital art not being taken as seriously, like identity pirates stealing social security and credit card numbers. If its' native form isn't tangible, then it should be open game...right? Just because it's 1's and 0's on a hard drive doesn't make it any less of a labor of love. Oh, for the want of a Shatner-esque situation, at some convention, where I could publicly humiliate people like this and verbally reduce them to a weak, blubbering pile of what used to be a person.

Time to stir the embers.
So, after almost two years of not doing collectibles, and over a year of not doing personal work due to growing my family, job duties, etc, it's now time to push forward and try to get the fires burning again, if at all possible. The past 3 years have taken a LOT out of me in every way possible, adding gray hairs and possibly subtracting years of life. However, I believe its time to get back on that horse. I've been blessed to work on so many big name movie projects over the past two years, and will continue to do so with Legacy Effects....Iron Man 3, Pacific Rim, Oblivion, Robocop, and even some design work on The Wolverine.....it's defini
Flame on....nope, burnout.
The past year has been full of changes. Changes in my family (my son, Logan, born last March, and another one due this Christmas), changes in our location (moved back to SoCal), and change in job (now I work for Legacy Effects, formerly Stan Winston). The biggest change, personally, has been my work. The past three years of going balls to the wall churning out a lot of work for the collectibles industry was a blast. Every year at SDCC was more phenomenal than the last. Then....burnout set in....I had been pushing too hard for too long. I didn't have time for family or even taking care of myself, and it was taking its toll. We decided to
SDCC 2011 has come upon us....get the towel.
Man...it is HARD to believe that SDCC is upon us once more! SO much has happened in one year. My wife was barely pregnant at last year's, now we have a wonderful 3 mo. old baby boy in our lives. We decided to move back to CA after this year's SDCC for damn sure, so I'll be back in the land of fun in the sun by fall. I sold my hot rod which took up most of my free time for the better part of the past 2 years. I started a new hot rod. I've thought long and hard about what's important in my life. I've reflected on things.
NOW, seeing SDCC 2011 is only about 3 weeks away, the heat is on. Not sure how much will be at Sideshow's SDCC booth
I *STOLE* this....
Sometimes, all it takes is one comment from the wrong person to poo on your day, right after you've gotten up in the morning. Very often, this is the case when someone with less-than-honorable intentions decides to comment on some little aspect of a *finished* piece. "OH, that vein on the bicep would do *this*, not *that*" or "your cloth looks like it's made of X material, when in reality it would be Y". *SIGH* facepalm.
While people are free to make such comments, they most certainly are not welcome. Nitpicking is a bad habit, and not becoming of the professional artist. I have found that many folks who do this do *not* work profession

I sleep well at night knowing that, once they walk away from the computer, these turds are once again relegated to their pathetic, lonely, powerless existences. They cant wear their little "cyber crowns" in the real world....which is why they spend most of their time avoiding it.
